A poor decision by the ref made this game very hard for Vale, when he sent off the Vale centre half Brian Wardle after a clash with the Port centre half Andy Kean. It looked as if he had awarded a penalty and was going to caution Kean, but he astonished everyone when he called the Vale man over and sent him off.

There was no score at half time, but Port Glasgow made the break through after a ball down the inside left channel split the defence. Vale fought back however and Dalrymple equalised with a right foot effort.

Vale had a great chance right at the death when Boal was through, but he elected to shoot when a pass through to Renton would have left him with an easy chance.
